Too Little, Too Late: An Excerpt

An excerpt from the novella Reflection in the Music:

It had been two weeks since she lost him. Pea had several regrets in her life. Her biggest regret was allowing her other regrets to interfere with her love for the man who passed away, the father of her unborn child. For what seemed like the thousandth time she reread Isaiah 55:8. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways.

“No, His ways are not my ways. If I had my way, Omar would still be here. And he’d know that he was going to be a daddy. And I wouldn’t be sitting here hating myself because I didn’t tell him sooner. And I wouldn’t be mad at myself because I would’ve listened to Jane all those times when she told me how things turned out when she did the same thing I did when she was pregnant with Sherri. And I wouldn’t be pissed at myself because I never would have let him love me as much as he did without my actively returning his love. And–,” she stopped mid-sentence and sat in silence.

Pea didn’t have any tears. She hadn’t had any at all since Omar passed away. So she sat. The same way she sat when she finally began to digest the reality. He was no longer physically there, and there was nothing she could do about it. She had made her decision too late, so her decision had been made for her. Once again.
